Mercedes Sprinter: Flooring

Photographer and cyclist and Mac expert and software engineer Lloyd Chambers is available for consulting on general Sprinter considerations at his usual consulting rates via phone, or in person in the Palo Alto, CA area. Save yourself hours and mistakes by discussing issues up-front. More about Lloyd....
A high quality upfit generally means replacing the stock flooring, which is 5/8" thick and lacks thermal or sound insulation.
A replacement high quality flooring consists of:
- Cork subfloor for thermal and noise insulation against the metal floor. Cork is mold and rot resistant.
- Marine grade plywood 3/4" base over the cork subfloor.
- Finished floor over the plywood.
Options for the finished floor over the plywood layer include products like Lonseal:
- LONWOOD DAKOTA Topseal in all sort of wood grains and colors from dark to light;
- LONWOOD MADERA Topseal in various imitation wood colors;
- LONZEBRA Topseal in striated wood patterns.
- Loncoin II flecks with coin surface embossing.
What I chose
I ultimately chose the Lonseal Loncoin II Flecks, Color 150, Onyx, shown below in sunlight.
Vinyl flooring gets hot in sunlight (e.g., van door left open and sun intrudes)—this is a significant negative.

Floor mats
The stock Mercedes floor mats do a good job of covering the driver and passenger area including the middle floor area. There are probably better options out there trap loose dirt and stones better (which I regularly track into the van), but these mats are a big improvement over letting the carpet be dirtied and not particularly expensive.
