Lucky me, I’m getting to ride the Moots Psychlo X RSL cyclocross bike tomorrow (one day loaner).
The Moots Pyschlo X RSL is a double-butted 3/2.5 titanium tube set with 6/4 titanium chainstays. The oversized head tube and bottom bracket make it a seriously responsive bike, with the elegant looks and superb durability of titanium welded by the master craftspeople at Moots. Indeed, the top tube has an unusual shape, one that is very shoulder friendly.
The test bike weighs in at 17.7 pounds with pedals, as light as many road bikes. And that’s with Moots titanium seat post and Moots titanium stem (carbon and aluminum can shave some weight there, if not as good looking). The wheels are Mavic Ksyrium aluminum.
I’ll try to fit in a photo session in daylight, as I did not get the bike until after dark the day before. And of course I’ll share my riding impressions.
Following closely in the footsteps of the Vamoots RSL and Mooto X RSL, this frame was designed to make it the leader in its class. Our overall objective was to build the lightest and stiffest, high-performance titanium cyclocross bike available to racers today. And to do it without compromising the unique Moots ride quality or lifetime durability.
We started by incorporating a 44mm oversized had tube to increase front-end stiffness and enhance handling responsiveness. This feature also allows you to run a 1 1/2” to 1 1/8” tapered fork if you wish.
Next, we spec’d our large-diameter, thin-walled, U.S.-made seamless, double-butted tube set to increase overall fame stiffness while reducing weight. We also incorporated our PF 30 bottom bracket to achieve greater stiffness for more immediate power transfer under accelerating pedal force.
For the rear section of the frame, we formed and tapered the chain stays and seat stays to increase clearance while providing an elegant look and supple ride for those times when the cross course surfaces turn ugly (which fortunately or unfortunately, they do quite often.)
Finally, we formed the top tube to provide comfortable shouldering for those stretches when the course is better raced on foot.
