Lightweight VR8 Aero Front Wheel Makes a Great Ride Every Day
I have continued to ride the Lightweight VR8 time trial wheel, with its 8 spokes. The rim section is a heavier build than the Obermayer, and its spokes are beefier too. Yet its ride is very comfortable (probably due to having 8 spokes). I even abused it as a cyclocross wheel on dirt trails, and I really liked it for that. I'd love to have a cyclocross setup with the VR8 front and Standard rear, but I don’t have the bucks to chew up such nice carbon with the grit and grinding they would see in dirt. Of course, if Lightweight loaned me a set for a a few months, that would be different!
I have really come to enjoy the way the VR8 rides, especially on fast descents, where the increased stiffness and rotating mass stabilized the front end, especially on lumpy pavement.
In crosswinds, the 8 spokes of the VR8 are definitely more friendly than the Obermayer 20-spoke front wheel.
Highly recommended as a front wheel to have in your quiver.
