Just in Time for New Year’s: Sunny Day Bike Ride Yields a Magnum of Chardonnay Lying in the Road
Sometimes life deals you a bad hand, and sometimes you get a straight flush.
Think of the timing required for fate to deliver into my hands a very nice magnum (1.5L) of Rombauer Carneros Chardonnay. A few seconds earlier or later and the prize would have been gone.
Mind you, I ain’t drinkin' the good stuff the past few years (and I know what it is!), not exactly being flush. My usual fare is the $8 to $16 range which occassionally yields something very nice. It’s more like “hey, it had a finish for a change”.
There I was, riding along enjoying the rare sunny day lately, and I spot a large bottle near the double-yellow median of the road. How that 'apple' fell of the apple truck without making a pile of glass shards, I have no idea.
My first thought was “big glass mess soon”, and my second thought was “that’s a nice looking unbroken magnum bottle”. The 2nd thought whipped me around 180° to snag it.
As I got to it, a fellow cyclist going the other way had spotted it too, and grabbed it. But the gentlemen was very nice in handing it over, as I had spotted it first (I wasn’t going to make an issue of it, but that’s the truth and he knew it and had seen me, bless him).
Cycling TIP: a magnum bottle can be wedged into a cycling jersey pocket for 20 miles of riding. Best to avoid bumps and sprints though. A bottle opener could go in another jersey pocket.
Just perfect for New Year’s, tomorrow.
All of which is waaaaay better than Dec 31 2018.
UPDATE: nice buttery chardonnay with a finish lasting 10-15 secodns.
