AI is Advancing Exponentially with Huge Risk to us All

re: artificial intelligence

re: AI is Already Defaming Public Figures with Made-Up Stuff

I don’t assess that we have any intelligence in artificial intelligence—not yet, and maybe that’s a long time off. Rather, AI is little more than “word thinking” (assembling words according to probabilitiy patterns—, a sort of idiot-savant mimicry. But that’s close enough to fool us a lot of the time (eg the “news”), and good enough to write just about anything and make up the news and replace a host of professional jobs which are rules-based.

If you have not yet used any AI yet, consider it critical to seek out and learn the one closest to your own field. AI adoption and its disruptions are moving at least 10X faster than internet adoption ever did, scary fast. What took the past 50 years (early 80's through now) for the personal computer and internet eras will be condensed into 5 years or less for AI. We’re talking months for major advancements, not years.

OTOH, I have failed to be able to even try one AI (Midjourney), due to the incompetence of the designers in basic signup—see below.

AI is the most disruptive technology in history. And it’s looking like we’ll get many of the evils of AI before the benefits.

Nasty problems are already here eg AI defames you and you have no recourse whatsoever?

Got a nice job? Maybe not for long. Barring legal barriers, AI is gunning for your job and mine. Plumbers and electricians and those with physical skills might be looking awfully smart when millions of white-collar professionals find themselves jobless—entire professions wiped-out. Barring protectionist legal barriers, which are a certainty, but that won’t prevent employment shrinkage with those privileged remaining workers “assisted” by AI.

WSJ: The AI Will See You Now

What happens in a world where your access to the AI is blocked?

UPDATE: it seems that I am not alone; podcaster Scott Adams riffed for 10 minutes on the serious difficulties of getting signed up and startyed with Midjourney. I

I have not been able to create an account and login at Midjourney imaging AI, so I am unable to try it. It’s almost like the AI has a plot against me; I’ve tried twice now, both times it almost immediately says something is suspicious and it wants to “keep me and the community safe”, makes me do some difficult captchas, forces both phone and email verification, presents other challenge screens, then gives me an invalid URL at the final step. Then I have to do it all over again. I have now “burned” two email addresses with this piece of shit artificial stupidity and never have been able to login and try it.

UPDATE: I think I know what is going on: the MidJourney and Discord sites do not and can never work with Apple’s privacy features eg Hide IP address from trackers and websites. However, even after turning that off and logging into Discord site (somehow required for Midjourney), I immediately get a TOS (terms of service) violation email, which is totally false, and I am locked-out all over again. And there is no customer service that can be contacted (I tried).
